Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning: Preview

Ken Rolston has a designer instrumental role in the game "The Elder Scrolls 4 - Oblivion" worked. Robert Anthony Salvatore's "Forgotten Realms" novels are an absolute bestseller. And Todd McFarlane is considered the spiritual father of the comic book character "Spawn". What happens when such creative people develop a computer game, Electronic Arts shows now on the Gamescom-game exhibition in Cologne.

Many experts describe the role-playing game "Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning" as a mixture of "Fable 3" and "Diablo 3". And indeed - the first minutes of the game in terms of recall character design and game world much to Peter Molyneux's "Fable" series. Gaudy pastels, bright colors - surprised the colorful graphic style, classic medieval role-playing games are usually still dark and heavy.

Choose in terms of gameplay the creators of an unusual way. After creating the character you choose from any class of shuffle mode. Whether you prefer fighting, magic or assassinate, set until later in the game. On three talent trees, the developers have put 60 skills that you unlock by and by using experience gained in combat points.

So it is possible to create common classes such as mages, warriors and assassins. But even mixed breeds can develop themselves as battle mages. As part of their presentation was played the title to the editor shortly. Positive first impression: While traditional magician in the early stages of experience very quickly bless this life, they are in "Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning" at the beginning of the adventure real fighting machines.

An example: An enormous ice spell paralyze an opponent in close combat. One click later, the hero draws a sharp blade - and shaved the villain. As the game progresses, both actions can be combined in many ways. If you have the perfect timing on it, are revealed graphically staged spectacular special moves that allow you to attack several enemies at once and refrigerate.

And partly in a brutal manner. In the fight sequences reminiscent "Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning" striking at the "God of War" series. With "Diablo 3" the skirmishes do not have much in common. To chat with peaceful inhabitants in the colorful world, the creators have built a dialog system, which is reminiscent in its operation to the communications options of "Dragon Age" or "Mass Effect".

You always have two or three options to communicate with your counterpart. Some of the actions set the course for developers, according to the game progresses. A profound moral system but lacks the role playing. Playfully makes "Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning" a good impression, even if the class of potential genre-flyer "The Elder Scrolls 5 - Hot Pursuit" is not well reaches.

The open world is huge, according to developers - at least 25 hours of play time should allow interested parties. The combat system is very intuitive, despite its complexity - with just a few gamepad input conjure up a fireworks display on the screen. But this is the only visual highlight the role play.

Graphically, the title can not keep up with many current competitors. Buildings and landscapes seem barren. Many of the sections shown in the course of the presentation are designed underground unloving.
