Microsoft and start-up Canadian Ortsbo resurrect the Tower of Babel in the Cloud! An example of services in the cloud that illustrates the strengths of public clouds. Ortsbo is not really a new service. Born in July 2010, it instantly translates in 50 languages written messages on instant messaging services like Facebook, Twitter, Live Messenger, GTalk or Google TencentQQ.
Here, no need to copy-paste using machine translation services of Google or Bing. Through a client (Silverlight), we chooses its service, it connects, it selects the destination language and start to discuss with friends: Any message written in your language is automatically translated into the language of caller, and any message written by your correspondent in his language is automatically written in your language.
With over 16 million monthly users, the service has enjoyed considerable success that its creators did not anticipate. To cope with this expansion, Ortsbo yesterday announced the launch of a new version of its service, this time in HTML5 and fully hosted on Windows Azure (Cloud Public platform from Microsoft) to gain simplicity rise support and substantial savings in infrastructure.
Currently in version "Alpha", this new platform will host both individual and commercial uses for instant translation into 80 languages. An announcement comes at a time when Google announced the closure of its own API for automated translation "Google Translate API.
