Prolonged shortage of hard drives

The hard drive manufacturers say that there would be major shortages throughout the second half of this year due to delays that occurred after the earthquake in Japan. DigiTimes says that large companies have resumed their activities, but the volumes delivered are not always sufficient. In addition, the products need to be recertified, which will also cause delays when demand is generally high during the third quarter of the year in preparation for Christmas sales.

Since April, a few weeks after the disaster, the first reports already provided to shortages and price increases from 5% to 10%. A month later, the estimates were talking about an increase of 10% to 15%, but the shortages should wane after the third quarter.

It seems now that the return to normal may take longer than expected. We have already contacted Texas Instruments, which must in principle return to normal levels of delivery in September. It is one of the leading components for hard disk.
