Core i7 980: the X makes the difference

Intel is expected to propose a few days a new processor in LGA in 1366, a platform launched in November 2008. The Core i7 980 (without X) is a Gulftown 32 nm and etched with six cores. Clocked at 3.33 GHz, this processor has 12 MB of L3 cache and will replace the Core i7 970 at the same price, normally $ 583.

The 980 and 980X are not exactly identical, but X does not change much. As usual, the difference between the extreme version and not the classic that is played on two points: the ability to overclock by increasing the multiplier and a QPI bus (FSB equivalent of) a little faster, it runs at 4.8 GT/s on the 980 and 6.4 GT/s on the 980X.

In practice, the difference in price (over $ 400) is obviously not justified, except for crazy overclockers. Still remember that if it is a good way to increase the power of a LGA 1366 platform, it is better to spend on technology Sandy Bridge to a new machine.
