Intel Atom for thought MicroServer

Originally designed for laptops at very low cost, Intel Atom finally arrive in servers. Intel has announced its intention to launch an Atom in 2012 specifically designed for "micro servers". Behind this name, includes Intel servers with a large number of low-power cores. They oppose the traditional grouping some servers very fast processors.

This new category has emerged recently with the explosion of online services. Intel plans MicroServer that weigh less than 10% of the total market for servers for 4 or 5 years. To meet these new needs, Intel will launch several low-power processors. The first will be the Xeon 1260L-E3 and E3-1220l-based architecture Westmere.

Then comes a Xeon Sandy Bridge in the second half of 2011, followed in 2012, Atom. The latter will be 64 bit, will manage the hardware virtualization (Intel VT) and ECC memory. It is surprising that Intel so long to wait to induct as the Atom processor for servers, companies like SeaMicro having already taken the plunge.

That in any case that might complicate the entry of ARM solutions in the market for servers.
