ARM - who does what Apple A5 (12)

Lets see the section "ARM: who does what" with Apple A5. This new SoC succeeds A4 used in the iPad, the iPhone and iPod Touch 4 4G. The A5 is a new generation of SoC, which lies between OMAP4 and OMAP5 or between 2 and Tegra Tegra 3. It's a smart intermediary because the CPU is a classical model, already used but the graphics chip is much faster than the competition.

Only small fault current, the chip is etched into 45 nm and is therefore much bigger than the Apple A4. For the processor is the classic type of two cores Cortex A9, with SIMD (NEON) and FPU and 512 KB of cache per core. It is a core about 25% faster than the Cortex A8 A4 in normal and really a lot faster on floating point computations.

Note that the A4 was a little more cache level for its unique core, 640 KB. For the frequency 1 GHz, Apple said, but tests show that the frequency varies with load, while the frequency of the A4 was fixed. Apple for the GPU out the big guns: a PowerVR chip SGX543MP2. Explain. The chip is SGX543 family 5XT, slightly faster than conventional models, proposing an architecture and supporting USSE2 OpenCL.

A core SGX535 - used in the Apple A4 - it's two computer units, two texturing units (fillrate than 1 gigapixel / sec) and 14 million triangles / sec A core SGX543 is four computing units, 35 million triangles / s and two texturing units (fillrate of 1 gigapixel / sec). In version MP2, there are two chips working in parallel, with a yield near 100% level of parallelization, thanks to my PowerVR technology, the "tile rendering.

In practice, the geometric power is multiplied by five, the two fillrate and computing power by four. Finally, the chip supports an external display in 1080p. For production, it is always the same: 45 nm from Samsung. The chip is obviously much larger, with 10.1 x 12.1 mm 7.3 x 7.3 mm cons.

Level I / O is classical, with USB, audio, etc.. The memory is 64 bits - 32 bits cons among many competitors - and we pass the LPDDR at 200 MHz (400 MHz equivalent) to the LPDDR2 at 200 MHz (800 MHz equivalent). The Apple A5 should evolve, integration in the iPhone 5 and 5G iPod touch. You can bet that Apple will follow its usual logic: to offer a version more finely etched in the iPod touch, 5G (28-nm a priori) and that the graphics will be limited to a single core type SGX543.
