Apple locks a little more the iMac 2011

Specialists hack Mac noted with horror that Apple has sentenced a little over its iMac 2011. Due to a proprietary connector, it becomes even more difficult to replace yourself the hard drive of the iMac. Apple launches the latest iMac power connector SATA 11-pin proprietary and not 7. This special cable is used to read SMART information returned by the firmware of disk without disrupting the transfer of data on the SATA cable.

Alas, the hard drives sold by Apple does not have a suitable firmware. Install them in the new iMac so block the reading of SMART, including the disk temperature, which causes the acceleration of the fan at maximum speed. Therefore impossible to replace yourself a failed hard drive or choose a larger capacity and quieter.

Fortunately, a solution would be found. It builds on the configuration of the iMac with no hard drive. It would short-circuit pins 2 and 7 of the SATA power cable. But it is possible that the hard drive manufacturers put on the market soon adapted to the iMac disks or the PC manufacturers adopt this new 11-pin SATA connector.

Stay tuned ...
