Apple's operating system is celebrating its birthday: Ten years of Mac OS X

Stockbrokers and Apple fans have become accustomed to the ritual: At the end of a business quarter, the manufacturer reports from Cupertino, California new record figures. Largely responsible for this are the iPhone and iPad. Both the text and the Tablet PC running the operating system "IOS" - a special version of Mac OS X.

Apple on the sunny side. That was not always so. Flashback: In the late '90s, the company with their backs to the wall. With Mac OS 9, Apple and only a lame compared to "Windows 95" and "Windows 2000" obsolete operating system. The main reason: Steve Jobs, computer pioneer and ingenious company co-founder, is no longer on board.

In 1985, the charismatic computer flew out of his own company. The new management bogged down in a guerrilla war with Microsoft and too little investment in new hardware and software. When Apple is almost bankrupt in 1997, brings you back Steve Jobs and his company bought NeXT. NeXT computer running with "next step", a powerful operating system that forms the basis for new Mac software.

On 13 September 2000, the first beta version of Mac OS X is ready. 2001 so far is: For 329 D-Mark launches Apple Mac OS X - and lands a direct hit: the operating system is powerful and has a stylish desktop interface, the controls is also little problems for beginners. The only drawback: Mac OS X only runs on Apple computers - and will come in recent years compared to Windows only modest sales.

Still, with Mac OS X put Steve Jobs and his team right to the horse. Because the core is a Unix operating system that can be used quickly for various platforms. So also is the switch to Intel processors, Apple performs 2006, without a hitch. And with the porting to mobile devices like iPhone and iPad manage the expansion of a substantial market for the future: IOS plays a major role in mobile devices and courting on a par with the likes of Google (Android) the favor of customers.
