There would be too Foundry

According to a report published by Gartner analysts who are joined by experts from HSBC and IBS, manufacturers of semiconductors currently have an excessive number of production lines, which will be damaging in the long term. They studied the expansion plans and the application of TSMC Globalfoundries, Samsung and UMC.

Analysts said the projects would be too ambitious in relation to the application and consequences should be felt at the end of this year or early next year. IBS goes so far as to say that the negative consequences of this overestimation of demand may affect until 2013. Specifically, according to IBS, demand should reach 127,000 transistors wafers per month, but production capacity will be 262,000 wafers per month.

These forecasts include the finer prints ranging from 45 nm to 20 nm. On a purely industrial, this means maintaining and keeping the production lines which will be decommissioned to avoid overproduction. This also means that investment by founders take longer than expected to be amortized.

Finally, we should witness a sharp increase in costs and higher prices led by manufacturers wishing to limit losses.
